Women’s Issues

Pay Equity

Sheirl Fletcher understands the challenges that women in the workplace face today.  She also understands how difficult it can be to manage a career, raise a family and to care for aging parents all at the same time.  But, it’s especially difficult for women when they are financially disadvantaged simply because of gender.  With 69 million women in the workforce, wage discrimination hurts the majority of American families.

Sheirl Fletcher believes it is time to strengthen all pay discrimination laws including the passage of the Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act giving fair and equal pay to women and minorities for equal work.  Currently women are paid 77 cents for every dollar men earn.  Pay inequity consequently follows women into retirement.  Pay inequity during a woman’s working years results in a reduction of income in her retirement pension and savings.

Health Care

  • Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women followed by stroke at No. 3.
  • More than 90% of doctors don’t know that heart disease kills more women every year than men.
  • Women are more likely than men to die within a year of having a heart attack and less likely to receive certain diagnostic testing and
treatments such as angioplasties and stents for cardiovascular disease.
  • Drug and medical device effectiveness may differ in women and men, so it’s uncertain how safe and effective particular medicines or
    devices are for women.
  • Preventative health care procedures such as mammograms and annual check-ups greatly reduce breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and other health related problems.

Sheirl Fletcher supports the HEART for America Act that will improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke by:

  • Educating health professionals about the unique aspects of prevention and treatment of heart disease in women.
  • Give researchers the gender and race-specific information needed to develop medicines, diagnostic testing and treatments specific for women.
  • Improve and expand screening programs for low-income women-at- risk for heart disease and stroke.

Sheirl Fletcher also supports the inclusion of preventative health care in any national health care reform package addressed by Congress.  As your senator she will fight to fund national health care reform that includes regular preventative care.

Domestic Violence

The home should be a place a safety, love and mutual respect for every member of the family.  However, for many West Virginians, the home is a place of violence and fear.

Domestic violence crosses all lines of race, religion, age or economic status.  And although there are some cases when a man is abused, it is far more common for women and children to be the victims of domestic abuse.

Sheirl Fletcher supports:

  • Funding to provide shelters and programs to ensure the safety of victims of domestic abuse.
  • Providing counseling and treatment for both abusers and the abused.
  • Educating the public on the seriousness of domestic abuse and its long-term effects.

On May 13th, please vote for Sheirl Fletcher -- for United States Senate.

She's Committed to West Virginia!
