Sheirl Fletcher is committed to... Health Care
PROBLEMS:
Health care costs are out of control. An estimated 310,000 West Virginians, including 34,000 children, are uninsured or underinsured because of the high cost of health care. Most of the uninsured adults are self-employed or work for small businesses that cannot afford coverage. When the uninsured get sick they have no choice but to go to the Emergency Room for care. The cost of their care is then passed on to those who have coverage. The result: ever rising medical care costs.
The high cost of prescription drugs force many on limited incomes to choose between life saving drugs and other necessities of life. This simply is unacceptable.
SOLUTIONS:
Our country needs a complete overhaul of our health care system, but I am not in favor of a one-size-fits all plan. I support a free-market solution to lowering overall health care costs. The American people should have control over their health care by purchasing policies that meet their needs. We should move from employer-based to consumer-based health care allowing competition to drive health care costs down and the quality of health care to rise.
Too little attention and funding has been spent on preventative health care in this country. Greater efforts must be made to educate the public on healthy life styles that ward off obesity, diabetes and heart disease. It is far cheaper and more effective to treat a potential disease than to cure it.
