Energy Independence and the Environment
PROBLEMS:
Our nation has been dependent upon foreign oil supplies for too long. Energy independence is crucial to our economy and our national security and the U.S. must invest in a dependable, cleaner, energy future.
SOLUTIONS:
- Promote a balanced national energy policy that meets U.S. energy demands by supporting a variety of energy sources including natural gas, advanced nuclear technologies and renewable resources such as hydro, solar and wind power. Coal and coal-based technologies must remain major players in our nation's goal of becoming energy independent.
- Increase federal funding for research and development for clean coal technologies, coal-to-liquids, and carbon sequestration.
- Encourage cleaner, more efficient use of West Virginia coal in our nation's power plants.
- Increase fuel economy standards for the automobile industry.
- Continue to focus on energy efficiency at every level of energy use.
Sheirl Fletcher understands that West Virginia is blessed with an abundance of coal and natural gas, and our state will play an important role in the nation's goal of becoming energy independent.
